Relationships are hard. Long distance makes them harder. In today’s world we have so many tools at our fingertips that somehow feels like it should close the distance, but never quite manages to. In Time Zones Apart Union College Theatre offers us a glimpse into a variety of relationships from platonic to romantic navigating their way through distance.

I enjoyed this production. It made me wonder: what is a relationship? It made me probe: what is human connection? It made me ask: What is theatre?

What is theatre? It’s a question for the ages. It’s a question that cultures and people have grappled with since the Greeks. And it’s a question the global theatre community has been trying to answer since a global pandemic sent us all home and shuttered our theatre spaces. While we’ve been caught up in redefining theatre in our generation, though, the rest of the world has been trying to sort out how to connect from a distance. In Union College Theatre’s attempt to sort it all out, I came to my own conclusion, answering all of the questions.

A conversation.
